At King’s, Byrne did speak about the importance of voting and also explained that yes, the instruments were truly wireless - very impressive given how flawless everything seemed. But there is a lot of feeling even without much being spoken to connect the songs in an arc. Should Byrne add narration or a narrative structure, the show might be more comparable to Bruce Springsteen’s Broadway run or Patti Smith’s recent intimate shows taped for Audible. You don’t need a deep familiarity with Byrne’s work (Talking Heads, solo or other collabs) to see how much fun the band has performing like a marching band, with entirely wireless instruments in a carefully choreographed production. And that brought more of the focus onto him, the musicians and their actions. (WFUV has archived audio from a different stop of the tour that is available for streaming here.)īyrne could have imagined extravagant possibilities to bring his songs on the road (see his Contemporary Color project) but he instead kept it simple and seamless. I managed to attend his show at King’s Theatre in Brooklyn and the quickly registered it as one of my favorite tours of the year. And you realize he’s not expressing trepidation or fear, only excitement.”īyrne should take on that project - the shows will sell out. “I’ve never done anything like that before,” he says, his eyes widening. Byrne is clearly intrigued: he would need to create a narrative arc, to connect the songs, but that doesn’t feel impossible. But this past weekend, in an interview Byrne did with The Guardian, it was noted in the final paragraphs that “there has been interest from the West End and Broadway in turning the American Utopia show into something more permanent. David Byrne‘s American Utopia tour has gone overseas so the buzz around the tour has somewhat died down in the United States.

The first Opus One vineyard utilized a block of the To-Kalon Vineyard, which had been owned by Robert Mondavi. These two creative men agreed to pool their resources and make a joint-venture wine in 1978. Opus One was the brainchild of two legendary wine greats, the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of the great first-growth Bordeaux, Château Mouton Rothschild, and Napa Valley's most famous vintner, Robert Mondavi. And so Opus One is truly a Cabernet Sauvignon, even if not labeled as such. In reality, each vintage produced since its first, in 1979, has been at least 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, and up to 97 percent in two vintages. Today, Opus One exports over 20 percent of its wines, mainly to Europe, and you can find it on the wine lists of some of the world's best restaurants.Īctually, Opus One is not labeled as a Cabernet Sauvignon, because the producers want the option to use different blends of the five Bordeaux red varieties planted in its vineyards - Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot in addition to Cabernet Sauvignon. But these wines were sort of California's little secret the rest of the world didn't know about California wines back then. It is certainly true that California did produce a few excellent Cabernet Sauvignons even before World War II - Beaulieu Vineyards Georges de Latour Private Reserve, Inglenook, and Simi come to mind. The California wine industry really didn't get moving until 40 years ago, and so it is somewhat amazing that the state can boast of a wine that is regarded by many as world class, but Opus One has attained that status. That's no surprise, because European wine regions have been established for hundreds of years. Most of the world's well-renowned wines come from Europe - many of them being either Bordeaux or Burgundy. In the comics, there’s a storyline where Bode’s spirit becomes separated from his body, and Dodge proceeds to pose as Bode. It’s such a great moment when you realize he’s been Dodge all along. The moment where Griffin as Gabe is riding his bike and he has this devilish grin, he really sells it. Harry Potter was referenced in the room all the time, specifically with that part. There were some Voldemort references, too. It was really fun to craft that montage at the end that basically shows you how he/she did it.Īverill: Exactly. We need to play fair with the audience, and we need to allow there to be time for Dodge to leave a scene, use the Identity Key, and go back to turn into Gabe. We had to be careful to never cut from a scene where Dodge appears in the form we call “Well Lady” directly into a scene where Gabe is already there. It was a fun challenge when we were breaking the episode. There are all these subtle clues throughout. We knew right away from the beginning of the writers’ room that Gabe would be introduced in episode two, because that’s after Dodge has been released from the well, and we would lay in all of these subtle clues: Gabe is also new to Matheson, Gabe seems to be hungry all the time in the same way as Dodge is. For Dodge, it makes a lot of sense to do that. Dodge is trying to embed himself/herself into the Lockes’ world, specifically Kinsey’s world. We reimagined it as, well, what if Dodge was hiding in plain sight this whole season? What if the audience and our characters both didn’t know it? It serves the same function. But the issue with it is that, Zack still looks like Lucas, so people are constantly recognizing him, and he has to kill them because of it. Meredith Averill: We loved the story in the comic of Lucas coming back and Zack Wells going to high school. What’s more, Dodge boasts a new ally: an unnamed creature in the form of Eden Hawkins (Hallea Jones). The Locke children and their friends exit the season believing they have vanquished Dodge once and for all tragically, Dodge remains at large in the form of Gabe, one of Kinsey’s (Emilia Jones) romantic interests. In the final twist of the season, it’s revealed that Gabe is actually yet another of the secret identities of Dodge, the demonic force who otherwise appears in the form of the Well Lady (Laysla De Oliveira) and the late Lucas Caravaggio (Felix Mallard). Much like the rest of the Locke family, Gabe is new to the sleepy town of Matheson, Massachusetts - or so he claims. Gluck appears in Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill’s adaptation of the IDW Publishing comic book series as Gabe, a new character created specifically for the Netflix show. For American Vandal fans who once suspected Griffin Gluck’s Sam Ecklund of committing the crimes at the heart of the Netflix mocumentary series, Locke & Key brings some measure of roundabout justice. He also credits the organ's esoteric properties for the band's sound. įocusing on strong songwriting as his influences did, Fitzpatrick desired to achieve a collective energy with the new group, and set a goal to capture "even just a little bit" of the magic of Motown and Stax recordings. "It let us have this more family, laid-back approach, and to be able to really take the time to do what we wanted in the way that we wanted," said Fitzpatrick. The band did not soundproof the room, instead desiring to "just go with it," which produced a sense of familiarity. The band recorded the entire debut in Fitzpatrick's living room, as they couldn't afford to go into a studio. In April 2010, Dangerbird signed the group, who immediately announced the album title, Pickin' Up the Pieces, and a promise that it would deliver "a burst of effervescent swingers." "The label is literally around the block from my house," Fitzpatrick said. The following morning, the label's president called a meeting. However, their last SXSW gig was a show for Dangerbird Records. "We just honed our own road, started playing before we even had songs to play, and developed our own fan base organically." The ethic was running out of steam by the time they became one of the major buzz bands at 2010's SXSW, where they ran out of money and resources amid congratulations from fans. "Nobody was really giving us the time of day in any shape or form," recalled Fitzpatrick. The entire foundation of the band from the start was a do it yourself approach. "I walked back into the kitchen of his big old house in upstate New York and his mother was there," recalled Fitzpatrick. Daryl Hall, of Hall & Oates fame, invited the band to perform on his popular web-series Live from Daryl's House. "He told Adam, 'you gotta hear this band.'" A week and a half later, Fitz & The Tantrums were opening for Maroon 5 on their college tour. " Adam Levine from Maroon 5 was in New York to get a tattoo and his favorite tattoo artist had downloaded the record after hearing us on KCRW," explained Fitzpatrick. The group had many notable early promoters. The band began to constant airplay on Los Angeles public radio station KCRW. Formerly a studio engineer, Fitzpatrick spent the bulk of his professional career behind the scenes, working with producer Mickey Petralia, who produced Beck, Ladytron, Flight of the Conchords, and The Dandy Warhols. Fitzpatrick used his technical skills he honed to engineer the EP himself. 1, at Fitzpatrick's home in Los Angeles, which he dubbed Dillon Street Studios. The group recorded their debut EP, Songs for a Breakup, Vol. They performed their first show at Hollywood's Hotel Café in December 2008, which Fitzpatrick booked one week after their first rehearsal. "We could have played a show that same night," recalled Fitzpatrick. They played their first rehearsal a week later, and instantly clicked. Five phone calls later, the Tantrums were assembled, out of college contacts of Fitzpatrick and King. Fitzpatrick envisioned a full band, in suits, with a female vocalist. "I could astral plane out and hear myself, like, 'wow!' Not bad!" Fitzpatrick knew he wanted a horn section, and he called college friend and saxophonist James King, and the two immediately began working on early versions of the songs. "I immediately knew it was the best song I'd written," said Fitzpatrick in 2011. By morning, he had already written "Breakin' the Chains of Love". Thanks to some "shady Russian piano movers," Fitzpatrick had the organ installed in his apartment that night. In late 2008, he received a call from the same ex-girlfriend, who demanded a rigid "no-talking" policy to tell him about a neighbor who needed to unload a church organ for $50. Having a hard time after the breakup, Fitzpatrick came to the conclusion that he needed to release the energy through creativity and get a focus and direction, for the sole purpose of distracting him from the discomfort. Michael Fitzpatrick, vocalist, founded the group shortly after a break-up. Upon its release, Pickin' Up the Pieces charted at number one on Billboard 's Top Heatseekers and received generally positive reviews from music critics. It was produced by Fitzpatrick and Chris Seefried. The band drew inspiration from various musical tastes, including Motown records and soul music, and recorded the album in vocalist Michael Fitzpatrick's living room, which he dubbed Dillon Street Studios. 1 and touring, Dangerbird signed the group, who immediately began work on Pieces. After the success of their home-recorded debut EP, Songs for a Breakup, Vol. Pickin' Up the Pieces is the debut studio album by American band Fitz and the Tantrums, released on August 24, 2010, by Dangerbird Records. When I catch up with Hammett, it is in an especially noxious space in the corridor of the decaying arena, with the smell of truck fuel, forklifts beeping, and the other sensations of gear and worker bees in motion. My task at the Rubber Bowl is to interview all the lead guitarists, from Kingdom Come’s Danny Stag to Edward Van Halen. “When I first heard Metallica, I didn’t comprehend that they were a metal band.” If there was another band as literally impactful at the time, I was unaware of it. It was evolutionary metal that would lead the genre in multiple directions: powerfully introspective songwriting, a new form of rhythmic expression, explosive nihilism, and edgier, more furious guitar virtuosity. This was heavy rock wrought extra heavy, then made even heavier by the band’s intersection of energy, virtuosity, power, imagination, and heart. And Kirk Hammett was entirely unfettered, tossing off ferocious melodies that were so fast and compact they were sometimes hard to absorb intellectually, but nonetheless landed breath-stealing emotional punches. James Hetfield drove the songs with his bristling, emotionally fraught howl, and used his profoundly insistent guitar style to command demon groove to do his bidding, with drummer Lars Ulrich and bassist Cliff Burton also keeping their hands on its chains. They pummeled … and artfully soared-a rare balance. What arrested me was more than Metallica’s garb, long hair, and the crowd’s headbanging. At that point, I knew nothing of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, since its sound never reached the rust belt of central Connecticut, where I grew up. But when I caught them on tour, I got it. To my ears, and the reference points of my outlier listening habits, they were mixing hardcore with the avant-garde-creating a sound more akin to Sonic Youth or sped-up Swans than Sabbath, Zeppelin, or Priest, all bands I also loved. I picked up Kill ’Em All on a whim in 1983, intrigued by the hammer with bloodstains on its cover. In fact, when I first heard Metallica, I didn’t comprehend that they were a metal band. It’s fun to watch, and transporting to hear. And the crowds show their love by exploding at the end of every song, and bouncing fans onto the stage like human volleyballs, tossed back by security in return. At this point in their career, they specialize in lurching, locomotive rhythms, head-snapping time changes, and a relentless wall of sound that, while brutal in its own delicious way, takes away the pain of the heat. There is nothing cartoonish about Metallica’s performances on both days in this unforgiving fortress of rock. A few months before I came on, the publication did its first metal cover, depicting Rob Halford and other hard-rocking heroes as Marvel comics characters. I’m there because I’ve been sent on assignment by Musician magazine, where I’m associate editor at the time, and perhaps the only writer there besides the Rev. At one point in his band’s set, Rudolf Schenker, songwriter and rhythm guitarist for Scorpions, tries one of his colorful stage moves-twirling a Flying V over his head while holding it by the headstock-and the guitar leaps from his sweat-covered paw, flies across the proscenium, and cracks in half. Everyone is hot, thirsty, and covered with sweat and dust. It’s 97 degrees in the Rubber Bowl and there is little refuge within its grim walls, and inadequate food and beverage service. In the songs they play that day, which include “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Welcome Home (Sanitarium),” “Harvester of Sorrow,” “Fade to Black,” “Seek & Destroy,” “Master of Puppets,” and “Am I Evil,” there is a world of pain and celebration, of self-doubt and exorcism-all hinged on James Hetfield’s downstroked guitar tones, a tsunami of high-gain amplification, and a drummer who is seemingly trying to beat the Devil back into his pit. But not as hard as Metallica, whose set detonates with an almost incomprehensible mix of rage and soul. Most play by the old-school rules of metal, and they hit their marks-hard. One of these things is not like the others. It’s June 1988, and the first day of a two-show stand for the original Monsters of Rock tour, with Van Halen, Dokken, Kingdom Come, the Scorpions, and, in the middle of the bill, Metallica. At least that’s how it seems in Akron, Ohio’s Rubber Bowl stadium, a nearly half-century-old, crumbling concrete relic built to amass the sun’s rays until hot enough to remove the flesh from the bones of the members of the University of Akron’s football team. Rumors that Rosario Dawson may be appearing as a fan-favorite character in this season of The Mandalorian have percolated for months, although Lucasfilm has not officially confirmed her participation. I don’t think it’s fair for us to not be able to enjoy something because one or two people decided that they were going to be disrespectful to the fans that made them who they are.”Īnother prominent actor has also been drawn into the uproar, although that situation is even less clear-cut. “I want everyone who loves Cara Dune to feel as welcome as I did when she first came out…. I personally am really glad that I finished mine,” Justice said. “I have talked to lots of other fans about this, people who didn’t finish their costumes now and don’t have the heart to do it. In the process, though, some who previously saw Carano not only as an ally but as a champion now feel alienated by her. Other Star Wars actors, such as Mark Hamill, John Boyega, and even Carano’s Mandalorian costars Pedro Pascal and Carl Weathers have been outspoken about their liberal beliefs, setting a precedent for Carano to express her own personal views. “It is just a priceless validation of your existence as a fan in the space.”Īfter her announcement, right-leaning fans filled Carano’s thread with supportive comments-sometimes accompanied by their own Parler account names. I want to support you, I want to promote you, and make sure you feel like you’re included in the space that’s been antifeminist for a long time’-it is something that you can’t even quantify,” Justice said. That naturally made Justice adore her more. well done! Looks good on you!!” the actor tweeted, followed by a series of cheerful emojis. “When you’re a Black woman who cosplays, and you cosplay a character that doesn’t look like you, there’s a lot of pushback in the fandom from racist people, from bigots and stuff,” Justice, whose Twitter bio identifies her as a “queer disabled Black superhero,” told Vanity Fair.īut Justice found a defender in Carano herself. After crafting a replica of Dune’s armor, Justice proudly posted a photo of herself wearing the outfit on social media. When lifelong Star Wars fan and cosplayer Jay Justice first saw MMA fighter Gina Carano in The Mandalorian as the well-muscled, tough-as-nails mercenary Cara Dune, she knew exactly what she had to do. |
